Workshop - Stockport Country FC
Together with poet Ruth Awolola, we spearheaded a transformative project in Edgeley, Stockport, where we collaborated with local youth to craft a captivating two-story mural. Celebrating the cherished football chant "The Scarf My Father Wore," beloved by Stockport County FC fans, the mural now stands as a beacon of community pride.
Our mission was twofold: to ignite a passion for arts and culture among the workshop attendees while integrating their connection to the local football club, Stockport County FC. Leading up to the mural's creation, Ruth Awolola facilitated engaging writing workshops, resulting in a poem integrated into the artwork. Then, I guided the group through a mural workshop, where each participant took ownership of a letter from the words ‘Father Wore’. I completed the mural in the following week using a scissor lift.
The unveiling of the mural was a momentous occasion, attended by local press, council members, County football players, and the enthusiastic young artists themselves. The project has been met with resounding acclaim from the Edgeley community and has garnered attention from notable platforms such as The Manc, Manchester Evening News, One Stockport, Stockport County and Stockport News Hub.
This project was made possible through collaboration with Grit Studios, County Community Trust, and The Writing Squad, and was delivered as part of Stockport Town of Culture.
