Toilet Graffiti

Toilet Graffiti

University brief: Graphically interpret a piece of music

I chose to interpret the piece 4’33’’ by John Cage, a silent composition intended increase the listener’s awareness of ambient noise and for this resultant sound to become the music itself.

After many failed attempts at reaching a satisfactory concept- I began journaling for 4’33’’ multiple times a day about my project process. Much in the same way that John Cage’s ambient noise became the piece, my journaling became my outcome. Most often this journaling took place in a specific toilet cubicle and so it seemed fitting to end this personal (and frustrating) project by scribing my journal entries across the cubicle walls.

The process took 7 hours including the writing and then the removal the graffiti.
